GCBC Week 18: “The Importance of a Name” by Elder M. Russell Ballard

[Thank you to Becca for creating this image]

There’s been a lot of buzz lately about the “Mormon Moment” in the media.  It’s great when our doctrines and beliefs get more attention and become better understood.  One thing that we have a responsibility to do is to make sure that we respresent well the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and help people know what our church means.  Elder Ballard points out that the name of the church encompasses the heart of our doctrine and our identity, and he reminds us to use that name to teach people about who we are.

The Importance of a Name M. Russell Ballard

“Let us develop the habit … of making it clear that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the name by which the Lord Himself has directed that we be known.”

To anyone who is checking out GCBC for the first time, the goal is to read one General Conference talk a week and discuss it together as an on-line “book club.” If you want to learn more, go here, and join the discussion here each week.

  1. This one has been on my mind this weekend. As a blogger/website manager, it made me want to redouble my efforts to be sure I write clearly about who we really are and what we believe by using the name of the Church and talking more about Christ.

  2. I love to hear my husband say my name – the endearments he says baby, honey, etc are sweet. But I love to hear him say my name. It is wonderful to me. And I hope that when people hear my name they think of someone who is good, strong and faithful. I hope no one frowns when my name is said. I love how Elder Ballard reminds of the importance of retaining all the good things associated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Our name reminds me of who I am trying to be like, what I want my children to grow up to be and helps me focus on my church callings and other areas of my life. Great talk! Thank you 🙂

  3. I loved how Elder Ballard dissected the name of the Church and explained the significance behind each part. I loved it so much I made a printable of it. Feel free to use it at will.

I also liked that he clarified President Packer’s talk from April General Conference. I know it was a little confusing that the Church was making the big “I’m a Mormon” media push, and then President Packer goes and tells us all to use the full name of the Church. It was good to get a little clarification on that.

Makes me grateful for prophets, and for semi-annual General Conferences 🙂

    • I am so honored that you used my printable on your post 😮 I feel like I just made it BIG 😉

PS – is anyone else ready for April General Conference? I usually don’t get the new-conference itch until the end of February, but I’ve had April General conference on the brain since Christmas! Maybe I should go back and read old Conference talks from before I paid attention?

  4. My favorite sentence of the talk was this – “Saint simply refers to those who seek to make their lives holy by covenanting to follow Christ.” I need to remember to become a better saint by striving to be more holy each and every day, and that happens as I keep my covenants.

You can read more thoughts here.

  5. During the clean-up efforts on the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina, there was a quote from a man in Louisiana who said the two groups that did the most good were “the Mormons and the Latter-day Saints”. You can see why the Church wants us to use the full-name. 🙂

  6. Hey just wanted to drop by and say hi!! I love these posts..,so thought out and beautifully written:..and funny ;). I love your mom too. It was so fun to get to know her better this last weekend.

  7. This talk made me want to do better — not only at using the correct name of the Church, but at better exemplifying the Savior’s teachings.

Thank you for doing this book club! It has been a great blessing in my life!

  8. I appreciated his reminders of what it should mean to us to take Christ’s name upon us. “We renew the effect [I thought that was interesting wording] of that baptism each week as we partake of the sacrament, signifying our willingness to take His name upon us and promising always to remember Him. Do we realize how blessed we are to take upon us the name of God’s Beloved and Only Begotten Son? Do we understand how significant that is?”

  9. This was a neat talk. I liked how he broke the name down and explained the importance of each part. (Love Becca’s printable)! I also like how he asked us if we realized how blessed we are to take his name upon us and if we understand how significant that is!

Please say something. I've said enough. :)
