GCBC Week 16: The Holy Ghost–Receiving Revelation

This week we are studying two really great talks. Elder Jensen and Elder Bednar both spoke about the Holy Ghost and I thought it might be really insightful to study them together.

The Holy Ghost and Revelation
Elder Jay E. Jensen
Of the Presidency of the Seventy

Receive the Holy Ghost
David A. Bednar
Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

How about you? What are your favorite moments or quotes from these talks?  Is there anything you learned here that you had not considered before?  What stood out to you as you studied it?  And, most importantly, what did it make you feel or want to do?

Please share your thoughts in the comments below.

  1. I enjoyed E. Bednar’s discussion about how we must actively seek the Holy Ghost. I think we might assume because we were given the Gift of the Holy Ghost that it is always around us. I liked the way he talked about how we receive it and then how we continually must work to seek it’s presence and recognize it’s whisperings.

  2. “The gift of the Holy Ghost is the greatest gift that can be bestowed upon man” Wilford Woodruff

This was a powerful quote for me. Also, the scripture D&C 88:33. I have never thought of this scripture in reference to specifically the Holy Ghost, alway with gifts of the spirit. Lastly, when Elder Bednar talked about what will happen if we aren’t doing the things to bring the Holy Ghost closer to us, he said these things will “cause the Spirit to withdraw from or to AVOID US ALL TOGETHER.” I would never want to do anything to cause the Holy Ghost to avoid me all together. That really struck me too.

  3. I loved both of these talks. These men are two of my favorite speakers!

This was a good topic for me to study this week. Last night I watched a documentary about North Korea and how they have no rights or freedoms. How grateful I am for the ability to worship how I chose and because of that, have the Holy Ghost in my life. It is such a comfort to me.

I liked how Elder Jensen talked about the different roles of the Holy Ghost. It made me desire to have the Holy Ghost’s constant companionship. By submitting my will to the Father’s through following the promptings of the Holy Ghost, I could feel at peace with what I am doing as a mother and daughter of God.

I always enjoy Elder Bednar’s talks, and this was no exception. What a powerful injunction he gave by reminding us to receive the Holy Ghost not just at baptism but every hour. I also liked the point he made here:

“Praying, studying, gathering, worshipping, serving, and obeying are not isolated and independent items on a lengthy gospel checklist of things to do. Rather, each of these righteous practices is an important element in an overarching spiritual quest to fulfill the mandate to receive the Holy Ghost… Fundamentally, all gospel teachings and activities are centered on coming unto Christ by receiving the Holy Ghost in our lives.”

This quote, along with the other things taught in both talks reminded me how important it is to have the Holy Ghost in my life. I hope I can do better!

  4. These two talks were perfect for me this week, I wish that I would have read them on Monday and then maybe the week would have been a little smoother. I loved Elder Jensen’s parallel of Lehi and Joseph, I had never made that connection before, and probably wouldn’t have on my own.

I love listening to Elder Bednar, his talks always inspire me to become better, this was no different. I love the description to “desire, yearn for, and seek the companionship of the Holy Ghost.” It reminds me that I have to be continuously seeking for the companionship of the holy ghost, which I do sometimes forget. I just assume that the Holy Ghost will always be with me, but he can only be there if I invite him and live my life in a way that is conducive to having the spirit.

  5. I have not one quote I love in these articles but close to a hundred quotes and ideas in these article that I love. I probably find this so interesting because this idea of personal revelation is where I’m trying to work on. A 70, Elder Packer, came to our stake a month or 2 ago and said that just like listening to our living prophets about 7 to 10 years ago and get out or debt and even being careful about our mortgages was important, it might be just as important for us to listen and be able to receive personal revelation in the upcoming years. I love so many quotes , so I’m choosing to talk about maybe not my most favorites and maybe not the most important. But some that might be overlooked. Quote #1 from Elder Bednar’s talk He said our church is a “living Church”! What does that mean? He said it was a living Church “because of the workings and gifts of the Holy Ghost.” I like that image – We have a living church- it is alive – alive with the Spirit. Our works, our classes, what we do- should be alive with the spirit, and not just following what was done years ago, but be following and being directed by revelation within the guidelines we have been provided by modern revelation..
    # 2 – If someone could come back after being on the other side and knowing what they know then what might they want us to know? Well in Elder Bednar’s talk a Prophet appear to another Prophet and took him what he would like for us to know. Elder Bednar said it was timeless counsel. It helped me answered some of my questions about “what should I do so I can more easily hear the spirit?” and “ how do I tell the Lord’s Spirit from other spirits?”.
Here is some questions I wrote for a game on Conference talks about this experience.
    Questions :
    1. What timeless counsel did Joseph Smith give after this death when he appeared to President Brigham Young. page 97;
    a. He said to tell the people to do these 3 things. What are they? ANSWER: (Be: 1. humble. 2) faithful and 3)Be sure -Keep the Spirit.)[Note: Amelia liked the word “keep” rather than “have”- The word “keep” shows more action and choice. I liked the words “Be sure” because I missed those words altogether at first and didn’t see them – when I saw them it help me realize we are to keep checking to see and evaluate if we have the spirit now.”]
    b. And these 3 thing will do what? ANSWER: (It will lead them right)
    c. Then he gave them a warning- What was it? ANSWER: (1. Be careful and 2.) not turn away the small still voice;)
    d. Why did he say this was important? It would do 3 things. ANSWER: (1. will teach [you what] to do and 2) where to go;3) it will yield the fruits of the kingdom.
    e. Then he added something to tell the brethren. what was it? ANSWER: (to keep their hearts open to conviction)
    f. Why? ANSWER: (so that when the Holy Ghost comes to them, their hearts will be ready to receive it.)
    g. Joseph said how you can tell the spirit of the Lord from all other spirits. How? (PS. Pick out the 10 fruits of the spirit the Lord sends to us.) ANSWER: (It will 1) whisper peace and 2) joy to their souls,
    i. and it will 3) take malice,
    4) TAKE hatred,
    5)TAKE envying,
    6) TAKE strife,
    And7) TAKE all evil from their hearts;
and their 8) whole desire will be to do good, 9) bring forth righteousness, and 10) build up the kingdom of God)

Quote: Several years after the Prophet Joseph Smith was martyred, he appeared to President Brigham Young and shared this timeless counsel: “Tell the people to be humble and faithful and [be] sure to keep the Spirit of the Lord and it will lead them right. Be careful and not turn away the small still voice; it will teach [you what] to do and where to go; it will yield the fruits of the kingdom. Tell the brethren to keep their hearts open to conviction so that when the Holy Ghost comes to them, their hearts will be ready to receive it. They can tell the Spirit of the Lord from all other spirits. It will whisper peace and joy to their souls, and it will take malice, hatred, envying, strife, and all evil from their hearts; and their whole desire will be to do good, bring forth righteousness, and build up the kingdom of God. Tell the brethren if they will follow the Spirit of the Lord they will go right” (Teachings: Joseph Smith, 98).

Please say something. I've said enough. :)
