We did it! This is the last talk we’ll study for this round of general conference. The conference countdown has begun.

That picture up there will make a lot more sense after you study this talk. It’s a classic analysis of the age-old question: why do bad things happen to good people?, and then it’s followed up with counsel of how to navigate those trials and testimony about the justice of God’s Plan. The answers, of course, are found in the Savior.

I know Easter is coming because I can feel it. The sun begins to shine more. The trees are trying to prove they’re still alive. Birds reappear. It seems like I can feel the warm breath of life itself slowly settling all around me. It all testifies of Christ, you know. There is no winter that cannot be overcome, and there is no night without a bright and shining morning. No sorrow or pain can remain when the bright light of our Savior shines down upon it. Even death itself is no match for the power of the Son of God.

I heard this song on the radio the other day (I listen to Christian radio in the car), and it just filled me to overflowing with that Easter feeling. I’ve listened to it no less than a dozen times since, and I just need to go buy it.

The song is “Hero” by a group called “Abandon.” Here’s an acoustic version they performed on Air1. Listen to the words and just let it soak in. I promise it feels like Son-shine.

I know it’s early, but Happy Easter.

What has motherhood taught you about Jesus Christ?

That’s the question I asked Whitney Permann of MERCY RIVER because it’s the central theme of my blog– finding the divine among the daily details of motherhood. MERCY RIVER is a musical trio of LDS women (Brooke, Whitney, and Soni). With thirteen kids between them, they understand how busy a mother’s life can be, and they also juggle being recording artists and inspirational speakers. Check out this video for a peek of them rehearsing and entertaining seven kids at the same time.

Here is Whitney’s answer:

What has motherhood taught me about Jesus Christ?

Motherhood has taught me many things. I’ve learned that patterned shirts hide snot and spit up better than plain shirts. I’ve learned that cell phones don’t work correctly after they’ve been sucked on too many times. And I’ve learned that I should always check for stray pull ups before I throw a load of laundry in.

I’ve also learned about polar bear habitats, all five signs of strep throat, and the name of every member of the BYU football team.

But most importantly, motherhood has taught me a lot about Jesus Christ. As a mother, I’ve learned about justice and mercy, faith and prayer, joy and sorrow, and deep, intense love. Each of these things connects me to Him.

We are taught that as mothers, we are “partners” with Christ. We offer ourselves as vehicles through which spirits can come to earth. But perhaps we are more than just “partners” with Him. Take a look at Moses 6:58:

“As ye were born into the world by water, and blood, and the spirit…even so ye must be born again into the kingdom of heaven, of water, and of the Spirit, and be cleansed by blood, even the blood of mine Only Begotten.”

Isn’t that stunning? Physical birth (from a mother) is symbolic of spiritual re-birth that will take place later in life (from Christ). So, as mothers, not only are we partners with Christ–

We are symbols of Christ.

We offer our physical bodies in pregnancy and childbirth to provide life for our children. Jesus Christ offered His physical body in death, to provide life for God’s children. And both involve water, blood, and the Spirit.

But it doesn’t stop there. A mother’s offering does not begin or end with her body. Yes, a mother offers her body through sleepless nights, weary arms, a well-worn lap, an aching back, and a listening ear. But what a mother offers most is her heart. Her entire soul. And isn’t that what Jesus Christ has offered us as well? Just as we see it symbolized in motherhood, He offers us His body, and His heart and soul.

So I ask, how does this knowledge–that we are symbols of Christ–change the way we view motherhood? Does it change the way I see myself or my children? Should it? And what is the meaning of it all? Why has He chosen to use mothers in this beautifully symbolic way?

I think it means He thinks we’re pretty special.

I think it means that mothering should be reverenced and protected.

I think it means that by daily nurturing, loving, teaching, and sacrificing for my children, not only am I coming to know more about Him, I am coming to be more like Him.

And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I love that, Whitney, and I absolutely agree. Perhaps no other calling on earth can give more opportunity to become like Christ than the calling of a mother. Thank you!

MERCY RIVER has just released a new album, “Higher,” and they are offering a free copy of their CD to one lucky reader. There are some beautiful songs on this album. I think my favorites are two songs I was already familiar with from the Christian radio station I like to listen to: “Blessings” and “Better than a Hallelujah.” This is great Sunday music, but it’s also upbeat enough for any day at home or in the car.

If you want to hear a song from this album, you can go to their Facebook page here and listen to “Beautiful Life.” You’ll also find more information about their current blog tour and any upcoming performances.

So, you wanna be a winner? It’s simple really. In just one or two sentences, answer the same question Whitney did: What has motherhood taught you about Jesus Christ? (Your answer doesn’t have to be original, just true to you. It can be longer, too, but no pressure.) Each person who comments before midnight on Friday will be entered in a drawing to win Mercy River’s new CD.

I saw this video message today and absolutely LOVED it. It would be worth 3 minutes to watch this message and hear the testimonies of modern-day prophets and apostles about the divine nature of Jesus Christ and His power to heal us and lift our burdens.

As a side note, we only have FIVE talks left. And then it’s General Conference AGAIN. ALREADY. Yay! Thanks to all of you who have participated in GCBC, especially to those of you who have hung in there since the beginning. I hope it has strengthened you to study these talks each week.

To anyone who is checking out GCBC for the first time, the goal is to read one General Conference talk a week and discuss it together as an on-line “book club.” If you want to learn more, go here, and join the discussion here each week.

I went to lunch several months ago with some friends. During a side conversation, one friend said to me, “That’s the worst part about growing up: learning about everyone’s problems.” I don’t even really remember the context of our discussion, but her comment has stuck with me. It’s so true. As a child, we have a very limited view of the world at large, and most of my memories are happy and carefree. As we grow older and our view of the world around us expands, we are exposed to more and more pain, suffering, and sadness– sometimes our own, but often in the lives of others too.

Over the last several weeks, Matt and I have been struggling with watching people we know and love go through some really hard things. Not just one or two friends, but several. There are marriage troubles, there are health issues, there are fears and anxieties. It has made us heavy-hearted, and frankly, a little discouraged. We want to fix things and we just can’t. We want to help, but feel so helpless. It kind of makes us want to hide from the whole scary world so we don’t fall into the same pits, but where and how? We start to wonder if everyone else on the planet has some deep, dark secret pain going on, and maybe we’re the only people who have “normal” trials, like bad days at work or budget woes or struggling to keep up with the demands of busy lives. (Does anyone else feel like that sometimes?) It of course puts your own trials into startling perspective, but it leaves you feeling a vicarious pain for what everyone else seems to be going through. And even though your own life is relatively “easy,” it’s not easy to watch the pain that’s happening around you. It hurts.

I’ve noticed it’s difficult to brush those feelings aside and deal with the matters at hand, like helping children with homework or finding socks or making dinner. They have no idea about the hard things going on in the lives of friends and family. You certainly don’t want to make it their burden either, but it’s hard to put on a happy face and go on like nothing’s wrong. This morning, after I got the boys off to school, I tried to get Natalie occupied with her own activities so that I could just crawl back into bed and think. Rest. Decompress. She kept coming into my room every 5 minutes to ask for help with milk or TV buttons or questions. I was losing patience quickly. It’s really hard to heal and mother at the same time. I wasn’t very kind.

I don’t have any real answers to this. I’m still working through it, but I wanted to share some of the things I’ve been thinking about and learning about in the meantime. Yesterday, I had a rare opportunity to be in the car by myself in between some carpooling drop-offs and pick-ups. I wanted something to listen to in the car that would help me focus my thoughts, and I remembered that I had an old general conference CD set somewhere. I scanned the bookshelf in the office, found it, and grabbed it. I really wish I had some kind of system in my car where I could just hook up my iPod and listen to whatever I want whenever I want, but I don’t. And it seems really dumb to invest in that kind of stereo equipment when my van is pushing 160K miles. Anyway, I had general conference CDs from 1998, and I popped them in and listened while I drove.

This morning I had to go to the dentist, and the CD was still in when I turned on the car. I heard the end of one talk that was nice. They had all been nice, but nothing had jumped out at me so far. Then I heard this talk: “Overcoming Discouragement” by Elder Val R. Christensen. Here are some of the things that I learned:

Many of us face significant challenges. Even the great prophet Enoch experienced sadness when he viewed the wickedness of the world: “And as Enoch saw this, he had bitterness of soul, and wept over his brethren, and said unto the heavens: I will refuse to be comforted; but the Lord said unto Enoch: Lift up your heart, and be glad; and look” (Moses 7:44).

There are at least three steps to take when striving to overcome discouragement:

You can work on changing your attitude toward the problem. Even though you can’t change the circumstances in which you work or live, you can always change your attitude.

You can receive help from those who are close to you—your family, friends, and ward members, those who love you the most.

You can develop a more powerful and complete trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Even before he started explaining his three points, I knew that there was truth in them. I felt the Spirit– enlightenment and hope.

By looking at a problem in a different way, it may be possible to reduce discouragement. I have been impressed with the pioneer story told about Zina Young. After experiencing the death of parents, crop failure, and sickness, she was encouraged with a spiritual experience that changed her attitude. While attempting to seek divine help, she heard her mother’s voice: “Zina, any sailor can steer on a smooth sea, when rocks appear, sail around them.” A prayer came quickly: “O Father in heaven, help me to be a good sailor, that my heart shall not break on the rocks of grief” (“Mother,” The Young Woman’s Journal, Jan. 1911, 45). It is often difficult to change circumstances, but a positive attitude can help lift discouragement.

One morning, several days ago, I got some bad news from one of my friends I’ve been worried about. I lay in bed in the quiet early hours of the morning and my heart just hurt. I could feel a real, tangible sadness. While I thought about that pain, I was reminded of something I’ve taught many times before in a lesson about the Atonement.

“I believe, to use an insurance phrase, we must pay the deductible. We must experience sorrow enough, suffering enough, guilt enough so we are conscious and appreciative of the heavier burden borne by the Savior.” (Elder J. Richard Clarke, in Conference Report April 1993, 10)

In that moment, I kind of got it. What I was feeling was just the tiniest piece of what the Savior felt when He took upon himself the pains of the world. It was pain from sin, but also every kind of sorrow. It is His pain. Not mine. Not hers. It’s His. He bought it with a price and I need to give it back to Him. I don’t need to keep it. So, I determined then that all I can do is hand the burden back and then pay close attention to what He wants me to do. He can show me how to help and how to move on. So in the several days since, whenever I’ve felt the weight of sadness, I try to replay this same scenario in my mind and let it go. Here’s another snippet from Elder Christensen’s talk:

I’ve talked about changing attitudes and receiving help from others. Now, let me mention the need to put more trust and faith in the Lord. I once talked to a woman who received help with her discouragement. While waiting for a temple session to begin, she picked up a Book of Mormon to read a verse. Her eyes fixed upon Alma 34:3: “And as ye have desired of my beloved brother that he should make known unto you what ye should do, because of your afflictions; and he hath spoken somewhat unto you to prepare your minds; yea, and he hath exhorted you unto faith and to patience.” The scripture in Alma was an answer to her prayer. The message was simple: the problem she faced was going to take a long time to solve. If we place a little more patience in the process and a greater amount of faith in the Lord, our challenges will find their way toward successful conclusions.

In the Doctrine and Covenants we read this: “If thou art sorrowful, call on the Lord thy God with supplication, that your souls may be joyful” (D&C 136:29).

Some of these things will take time to work themselves out. I have faith that some of them really will work out just fine, but it may take a while. There may be long periods of down before the up figures itself out. So that’s what I’m working on right now: finding joy and optimism despite sad things happening around me. When the talk was over, I turned to Natalie in the back seat and said, “Natalie, I’m sorry I wasn’t very nice to you this morning when I was in bed. I was frustrated because I just wanted some rest, but I still should have been kind. I’m sorry.” She, being the epitome of childlike forgiveness, simply smiled and asked what was for lunch.

Anyway, I’m sorry if this post doesn’t have a cute little conclusion that makes it all better. I’m still working on it, but I wanted to share what I’ve learned so far, and hopefully it can be helpful to someone who’s dealing with or feeling some of the same things.

There’s been a lot of buzz lately about the “Mormon Moment” in the media. It’s great when our doctrines and beliefs get more attention and become better understood. One thing that we have a responsibility to do is to make sure that we respresent well the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and help people know what our church means. Elder Ballard points out that the name of the church encompasses the heart of our doctrine and our identity, and he reminds us to use that name to teach people about who we are.

You know, once you decide to work on a goal, stuff happens and it becomes kind of hard. Take our family goal this year: Try to Show Kindness in All That You Do. Well, people do dumb things. People say dumb things. From where I stand, sometimes it looks like people live dumb things. And, sadly, that makes it hard to be nice. But like the song says, “I want to be kind to everyone, for that is right, you see.” And so it is. It’s right. It’s hard, but it’s right. So even though the first week of January made this feel particularly difficult, I’m going to keep trying.

I’m thankful for the Atonement, by the way. I’m thankful that the Savior was so kind that he was willing to offer forgiveness even to people who intentionally hurt him. And then he still offers forgiveness to those of us who get angry when people are intentionally mean to us or toward people or things we hold dear. It’s hard to be kind and angry at the same time. Believe me, I’ve tried. I found out that kindness is much easier if I just give the angry back to Jesus and let him take care of it. He always does if I let him.

Thanks so much to a sweet reader who stumbled upon my request for something to hang on my wall to remind me about my new goal. In a quick whirlwind of talent and kindness, she created this printable (above) for me, and I love it. You’re welcome to download your own copy here. Thanks, Jen!

Somewhere on Facebook, a friend also shared this video of the primary song that’s the source of the goal phrase. It’s really quite lovely, and I felt the spirit confirming the simple, sweet message as I listened. Hope it adds a dose of goodness to your day, too.

“At times I am tempted to make a wrong choice, but I try to listen as the still small voice whispers, Love one another as Jesus loves you. Try to show kindness in all that you do. Be gentle and loving in deed and in thought. For these are the things Jesus taught.“

Have a great week, friends.

I know that Christmas can be a stressful time; for me, the most stressful part is always the finances– struggling to find the balance between what I would like to do or get for people and the realistic constraints of my budget. I don’t always succeed, and then I cause myself undue stress by making things tighter than they should be.

But despite the money tug, I love Christmas time. I love the feeling. The excitement. The spirit of it all. I admit that it’s getting harder and harder to find amid all the ridiculous “If you can’t get your wife a new car or a diamond something for Christmas, you’ve somehow failed” marketing mentality. Because –really– that’s just dumb. I actually enjoy some of the bustle and lines at stores, and I feel like most of the people are sincerely out to find things to show love to people they care about.

I love nativity sets.

I love Christmas music. The good stuff. There are plenty of “holiday” songs I could do without, but thank goodness for Pandora online radio, which I am constantly streaming in my house.

I love The Messiah. I probably normally couldn’t convince my husband and children to go sit through a really long choral performance, but when blog friend DeNae mentioned she was participating, I jumped on the reason. It totally, absolutely put my Christmas heart in the right place. It was long, and the hour was a little late, and the children were a little restless, but they were so GOOD. I think they felt and understood the reverence and majesty of it. Natalie now sings the Hallelujah chorus while she walks around the house, and I love it.

I love the “excuse” of the holiday to express love and appreciation for friends and neighbors, my children’s teachers and leaders, and people who bless my life all the time and often go unnoticed.

I love, love Christmas cards. It’s like a little walk down memory lane of friends from years and stages past. I love all the good people God has put in my life and Christmas cards remind me how abundant that blessing is.

I love looking for and finding service opportunities that our family can participate in. Sub for Santa participation is always fun and rewarding. Yesterday, the kids and I paid for the meal of someone behind us at a drive-through window, and they loved peeking their heads above the back seat to see the surprised reaction as we drove away. I just love stuff like that because it feels so … good.

I love chocolate. I’m on a diet, but still.

I love that this is the only time of the year that snow can fall, and I don’t feel bitter about it.

I love finding simple ways to celebrate. I’m all about doing things with as little time and money investment as possible. Like when we drove around our neighborhood and gave out “Best Christmas Lights” awards. Or when we made cookies just because we had a little time and then drove around to give them to people we maybe didn’t think of the first time around.

I love trying to make the big day as special as possible by doing most of the hard work before it comes. This is why I actually had my wedding reception the day before my wedding. And it’s why I do my Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve. I just like spending the real day in as much relaxed peace as possible. And leftovers rock.

I love Mary. I don’t think we ever give her enough credit for how Jesus Christ turned out. Yes, he was divine. Yes, he was foreordained. But she raised him and guided him and helped him become all he was meant to be. She must have felt an incredible responsibility, and I have no doubt that her initial submission to the Father, “Be it unto me according to thy word,” set the example for all that Christ did throughout his life.

I think the real reason I love Christmas is because I love Christ. It’s just that simple. And all the extra attentions at this time of year feel like a way of honoring Him and showing Him how special He is to me and my family. Because like The Messiah declares, He spent a lot of time being despised, rejected and spat upon, and I guess it feels like there can never be too much praise to pay Him back for all He suffered for me.

So. Merry, merry Christmas. I hope you find many things to love, many ways to love, and many opportunities to feel love for the rest of the holiday season.

“It is proper during this season when we commemorate His birth that we remember the Lord Jesus Christ in reverence and with love. He has done for us what we could not do for ourselves. He has brought meaning to our mortal existence. He has given us the gift of eternal life.
“When all is said and done, when all the legions of the ages have passed in review, when man’s terrible inhumanity to man has been chronicled, when God’s great love for His children has been measured, then above all stands the lone figure of Jesus Christ, the Redeemer of the world, the Savior of mankind, the living Son of the living God, the Prince of Peace, the Holy One.” — Gordon B. Hinckley

Life on earth is what it is. It’s not easy. Some days we feel awash with struggles that seem overwhelming. I sometimes do, and then I feel ridiculous because my trials are so small in comparison to some of the crosses that others carry with grace. And while the contrast makes me feel petty, the reality remains that we each face things that are difficult for us. It is part of God’s plan.

Life hurts. Happy Thanksgiving.

Seems like a strange juxtaposition, but I feel so grateful that God’s plan gives meaning, direction, and support through the bumps of mortality. I love knowing that whether my challenges are large or small, they are challenges that are part of God’s plan for me, and He will hold me in His hand and help me become who I can be.

Don’t be alarmed; I’m not passing through any dark or secret trials. As I’ve tried to focus on gratitude this week in preparation for Thanksgiving, I’ve felt blessed beyond measure. However, I’ve recently seen some heavy burdens in the lives of people I know and love. I wish I could fix things for them, but I can’t. Jesus can. And if He helps me when I have a silly bad day, He’ll help you when life takes turns that feel more than bad. That’s exactly what He’s there for.

I watched both of these videos this week, and they have helped shape this particular measure of gratitude I’ve been feeling. I hope you enjoy them and that they take you a step or two further in thanks.

VIDEO 1: Elder Nelson testifies that there is hope in trials.

VIDEO 2: The prophet Joseph Smith declares that our challenges polish us in glorious ways and bring us to the Savior.

[I couldn't figure out how to embed it, but go here to see it. It's so good.]

I’m thankful that Jesus Christ lives and that His love and His gospel help us navigate our way through the ups and downs of life. Happy Thanksgiving, friends.

When my brother was in the hospital, I got to drive up and down the freeway many times. I soon became familiar with all the billboards. This was one of my favorites (and by favorites, I mean it made me want to beat people up.): A lovely, buxom woman smiled down upon us shapeless freeway drivers through the huge words, “All I want for Christmas is my two front … .” The meaning behind “…” became clear as you read the name and number of the Plastic Surgery Clinic that she was referring you to.

When we were house hunting in Utah, we tried to make an appointment for a second showing of a house we were interested in. The Realtor informed us that we could not come until after 3 p.m., because the homeowner was hosting an eyelash extension party. Excuse me, a what? I had never even heard of such a thing in my life. I have since seen and heard about this phenomenon many, many times.

I read this article this morning, and I found it really interesting. I recommend it. It reported:

Though no religion-specific data exists to show rates of eating disorders or body image issues, numerous accounts from diligent parents, priesthood and auxiliary leaders of struggling girls, and women speak for themselves. And one of Forbes magazine’s annual rankings may indicate that our quest for perfection took a wrong turn somewhere along the way: Salt Lake City, home to the worldwide headquarters of the LDS Church (and where an estimated 50 percent of the population is LDS), was ranked the “Vainest City in the Nation” in 2007 and 2008, and was in the Top 5 in 2009. This ranking is due to the city’s record-breaking amount spent on beauty products and treatments like Botox, an amount that is ten-fold the amount spent in cities of comparable size. If you’ve looked at the billboards along any Utah freeway, you won’t be shocked to hear Salt Lake City has the most plastic surgeons per capita, at six per 100,000 residents, trumping New York City and Los Angeles.

Why? I don’t get it. Of all the people in the world, we should be the most embracing of our God-given selves. Though the LDS doctrine does teach us to strive for perfection, with an emphasis on following the example of Jesus Christ, it absolutely does not teach or endorse that we should make our bodies measure up to society’s definition of perfection. In fact, Elder Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said the following:

I plead with you young women to please be more accepting of yourselves, including your body shape and style, with a little less longing to look like someone else. We are all different. . . . In terms of preoccupation with self and a fixation on the physical, this is more than social insanity; it is spiritually destructive, and it accounts for much of the unhappiness women, including young women, face in the modern world. And if adults are preoccupied with appearance—tucking and nipping and implanting and remodeling everything that can be remodeled—those pressures and anxieties will certainly seep through to children. At some point the problem becomes what the Book of Mormon called “vain imaginations.” And in secular society both vanity and imagination run wild. One would truly need a great and spacious makeup kit to compete with beauty as portrayed in media all around us.

You may have heard before that Utah also leads the country in the use of anti-depressants. This is, again, a mystery. There are some who argue that it’s probably a product of the high expectations of the LDS church culture and people feeling like they don’t measure up. I don’t buy that, because a careful study of any of the counsel that comes from the general leadership of the church never has that kind of tone. On the contrary, there are consistently messages of love, encouragement, and acknowledgment of our goodness and power and influence. This is especially true for women. Not anywhere else do you find more empowering words or praise for womanhood than you do from our own pulpits. There are also myriad talks about adversity, challenges and tribulation, and how to deal with them, which clearly eliminates the expectation of living enchanted, perfect lives. So what gives?

I’m obviously not an expert on these sociological matters, but I think I can see where some of this struggle originates. LDS women are like other women throughout the world; we have struggles and sadness and insecurities. There are also rampant mental health issues throughout our society, to which we are not immuned. As I have become more and more of an adult, I have begun to see how many people, including many friends and family, struggle with depression, anxiety and consistently high stress. Life is a pressure cooker that seems to take a great toll on our mental health. We often need help. It is safe to say that we all self-medicate. When pressures are high and our ability to deal with them feels low, we turn to something to help us feel better. Within the LDS faith, because of our doctrinal principles, we do not turn to the same things that many, many other people turn to in times of stress– drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, pornography or self-serving sexual behaviors, for example. Perhaps our anti-depressant numbers are seemingly skewed because of this. Other people with the same struggles self-medicate differently. (I want to make clear that I do not have an anti-medication stance. At all.) Perhaps this also explains, in part, the obsession with beauty issues. When women feel overwhelmed and empty, they look for ways to make themselves feel better, and for LDS women, fake eyelashes is not “against our religion.” Whatever the reasons, which I really don’t know, I think we all need to do a better job of turning to the right place for help.

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:38

I am not advocating throwing out your mascara or your Prozac and just dedicating yourself to scripture study. That would be naive. I do think that no matter what level of struggles we face, we can find much more relief the more and more we learn to rely upon the Savior. We will find more sense of self-worth. We will find forgiveness for our imperfections. We will find strength in our trials. We will find love and acceptance and be filled in the places we feel empty. A careful study of all those Your-Life-Will-Not-Be-Perfect-So-Be-Prepared talks that come from the general leadership of the church will point us in the direction of Jesus Christ. So this is basically a war cry to LDS women everywhere: When life hurts, and it will, you are not alone. Turn to your Savior and let Him share your burdens and remind you how beautiful you are, just as you are. As a completely average, A-cup, almost 20 pound “overweight,” frazzled mother of young children who’s still wearing my pajamas, I give you my word that it works. It really does. Let’s get a few billboards for that.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m a big fan of Santa. He was a very magical part of my childhood, and his name is a very effective motivator around here during the holidays. Today my children got a message from Santa reminding them to be good. They nodded wide-eyed and recomitted themselves to a life of polite obedience.

I started thinking about the difference between Santa and Jesus. Here’s the thing. On Santa’s plan, if I mess up, I run the risk of not getting what I wish for. He’s kind of jolly about it and all, and come next year, he’ll give me another chance, but when it comes right down to it… it’s a completely saved-by-works-alone kind of plan.

Jesus, on the other hand, isn’t so winking and ho-ho-ho jolly, but he’s just so much more . . . well, real. He expects the best from us, but understands our human foibles. And even when we make mistakes, even when we’re downright stupid, he still kind of blesses us. He extends mercy without judgment and love without condition. I mean, sure, he’s a “judge,” but not in measuring out love or assistance. He will help us any time we let him, even when we’ve been naughty. When we don’t qualify for a single gift, he still offers us the greatest gifts that can ever be given: grace, mercy, forgiveness. Santa’s a toy maker; Jesus is a joy maker.

So Santa Claus is cool and all, but I love Jesus best.

Merry Christmas, everyone.

I’m going to make a declaration about housekeeping that’s probably going to sound stupid. I don’t claim this philosophy to be any doctrinal absolute, and I admit up front that it may be entirely motivated by rationalization; nevertheless, I’ve thought about this for several months and I’m ready to declare it true in the Book of Stephanie. Ahem . . .

I don’t think we’re supposed to have a clean house. I think we’re supposed to WANT a clean house and work toward it. This phrase from April’s General Conference about Mary and Martha’s house fit in perfectly with my philosophy on this:

“It was a welcome place for the Master, where He could rest and enjoy the surroundings of a righteous home.” ~ Elder Gregory A. Schwitzer

I think the Savior would rather hang out in a home where people are working together harmoniously (even in a very unfinished project) than where a mother on the verge of a nervous breakdown is screaming at her children to get their last sock off the floor, and they better not have left the hand towel on the floor when they just used the bathroom. In fact, if he showed up at my house right now, I bet he’d sit on the floor next to me and help me fold laundry while we talked about important things. But I’d miss out on that if I ran around like a freak trying to clear the counters and make the beds really quick before I paid him any attention. I think I’d even miss out on that if I sat down with him, but my mind was constantly focused on everything that was undone.

Don’t get me wrong, I still believe that “cleanliness is next to godliness,” and all that “house of order” stuff, but I believe what matters most is that we are consistently striving to make our home a place where the Spirit of God is welcome. And if that’s our goal, be it in the early stages of chaos or the last load of laundry, for all intents and purposes, I think the Savior knows He’s invited. And that’s all that matters.

Okay, people, only one more week until General Conference. (yay!!) This week we will study our final talk and then we start all over again. Please join us.

General Conference Book Club Week 23:

I saved President Monson’s talk for last. We kind of skipped over it a while back when I was in the middle of my move, and it certainly deserves time to be considered. He spoke at the Sunday morning session, sharing his testimony of the living Savior in “He is Risen!”

“To understand the meaning of death, we must appreciate the purpose of life. The dim light of belief must yield to the noonday sun of revelation, by which we know that we lived before our birth into mortality. In our premortal state, we were doubtless among the sons and daughters of God who shouted for joy because of the opportunity to come to this challenging yet necessary mortal existence. We knew that our purpose was to gain a physical body, to overcome trials, and to prove that we would keep the commandments of God. Our Father knew that because of the nature of mortality, we would be tempted, would sin, and would fall short. So that we might have every chance of success, He provided a Savior, who would suffer and die for us. Not only would He atone for our sins, but as a part of that Atonement, He would also overcome the physical death to which we would be subject because of the Fall of Adam.”

In the comments, please share your thoughts about this talk, your feelings about President Monson, or what you’re most looking forward to in Conference next week.

Go here to find the media versions of the talk (audio, video, mp3, etc.). If this is your first visit to the General Conference Book Club, click here to learn more about it. Next week will begin a whole new round of GCBC; please consider joining us again. Invite friends, neighbors, your readers etc. to join us in pondering and discussing the words of God as spoken through our living prophets.
